Adult Learning Principles

The term Pedagogy has been described as the theory of learning, and many pedagogical principles are used in adult education throughout Australia.

Pedagogy comes from an Ancient Greek word, meaning 'to lead the child'. The evolution of pedagogical theory aligns closely to this original meaning as it is really only suitable for child education.

Malcolm Knowles reasoned that the term Andragogy is more pertinent when discussing adult learning. He referred to Andragogy as the art and science of teaching adults, where adult learning is:

  • Self-directed: they want to take responsibility for their own learning.
  • Influenced by experience: experience, including mistakes, have an impact on the way adults learn.
  • Relevant and practical: adults must perceive a need to learn and a real-world application.
  • Motivated by internal factors: self-esteem, natural curiosity, desire for recognition, innate love of learning.
